Particle separation from aqueous media.

Photo of a filter cake.Separating particles from aqueous media is one of the most common applications throughout. Filtration is clearly one of the most commonly used techniques, but there are many others like centrifuges, hydro cyclones, magnetic separation and sedimentation. The products and solutions supplied by Lomapro b.v. also fall in this range, but are developed for a specific application.

The metal industry frequently uses water or water based fluids in their production processes. From plain water for high pressure de-burring through specialty cleaners to complex emulsions for the machining of complex parts and constructions. What all these applications have in common is that the water based medium gets polluted in the production process, which limits its life time.

Separating the pollution from the medium, during normal production, not only extends the life time but significantly adds to the product quality; pollution no longer affects the production process. If separation can be done in an economical way, with minimal use of consumables and minimal waste being generated, an investment in the right separation technology pays back very quickly.

Q-Filter® active vacuum filter.

Photo of the QF-150.Q-Filter® is used for the filtration of aqueous fluids and uses filter cloth from a roll, in combination with vacuum, to remove particles from the medium. This is not new, but the features of the Q-Filter® active vacuum certainly are.

A vacuum filter uses an exhauster (vacuum pump) to create under-pressure at the clean side of the cloth, to help pull the medium through. The exhauster is turned on or off, depending on a liquid level, and creates an under-pressure of -20 to -70 mbar.

Q-Filter® creates an vacuum of up to -200mbar, which is already much more than any comparable system achieves. Just as important is the way in which the vacuum capacity is used.

The Q-Filter® continuously increases and decreases the vacuum, in response to the process conditions, for optimal performance. Depending on the amount of fluid coming, the nature and amount of dirt in the fluid and the loading of the filter cloth, the vacuum is continuously  increased or decreased. The result is minimal filter cloth usage at a very high efficiency (very fine filtration).

 Q-Mag® automatic magnetic separator.

Photo of the Q-Mag.Being in the metal industry, a very large portion of the particles that need to be removed are metal and lots of those are magnetizable, which makes the use of magnets for the separation an option. A significant advantage of magnetic separation is that no filter cloth or other consumables are necessary, and if the particles are separated with minimal amounts of fluid, the waste that needs to be disposed of is practically limited to the pollution only.

As with many separation techniques, the principle is simple. Allow the medium to pass a strong magnet, and all magnetizable particles will be attracted by the magnet and are that way removed from the medium. Yet there are two challenges. One is to remove the particles from the magnet, which is not that easy to do automatically. The other is that as the amount of dirt on the surface of the magnet increases, the effectiveness drops drastically; the magnetic field gets caught in the dirt layer.

The Q-Mag® deals with both these challenges with one, simple, solution. Dirt depositing on the surface is continuously and automatically removed from the surface of the magnet and concentrated in a separate sludge chamber. And since the sludge chamber is automatically emptied, without interrupting the normal operations, the Q-Mag® offers a very effective and reliable tool with a high flexibility.
